He served as Baltimore City's first superintendent of schools, but was fired after two years for establishing two schools for African American children without the permission of the school board. Front board along with the front free end paper are detached but present. Other wear to exterior includes minor rubbing to boards as well as bumping and chipping to spine ends and corners. Inscription from the author to front free end paper reads "Presented to Robert J. Kerr by the Author. Baltimore Feb 28th/54." Writing in pencil to front pastedown explaining that Edgar Allen Poe wrote favorably of McJilton in letters. First signature is detached but present. Minor foxing to first and last 15 or so pages though text remains bright and mostly clean. Slight browning to margins. Good candidate for restoration. More photos available. 360 pages. POE/062626
